A software that identifies people based on the way they use their mouse and keyboard

A software that identifies people based on the way they use their mouse and keyboard could someday eliminate the need for passwords, experts say.
Individuals subconsciously use their mouse and keyboard in predictable ways and these behaviours can reliably identify them, experts believe.
Examples of these actions include how quickly a user selects buttons that pop up on screen, how long they hover over menus, how fast they move the mouse and whether they scroll using the cursor keys, the scroll bar or the mouse wheel.
"We don't need to find behaviours unique to each person on the planet," said Neil Costigan, CEO of Behaviosec in Lulea, Sweden.
"We just need enough of a spread of behaviours to verify that someone is who they say they are. We look at the behaviour to see if it matches that person's previous behaviour," Costigan was quoted as saying by 'New Scientist'.
Companies are already beginning to implement this technology. In the US, IBM is starting to deploy the technique in online security software it sells to banks.
IBM's system monitors behaviour only after a person has logged in using their password. This can prevent a fraudster making transactions, pretending to be an authenticated user who has, for example, gone to make coffee without logging out.
When behaviours are detected that are out of character, the software will ask them to log in again with some extra security questions.
Another software by Biocatch, a firm based in Tel Aviv, Israel, presents people with what it calls subconscious "challenges" that garner distinctive responses.
For instance, the software makes the cursor disappear for a few seconds and the type of mouse motion people use to recover it - clockwise, anticlockwise, large arc, small arc is recorded.
Uri Rivner of Biocatch said that by building a model of how individuals respond to these challenges, and then monitoring actions while banking or shopping online, the software can tell within a few keystrokes if the user is the same person who originally logged in.

Nikon Coolpix P340

The add-on Wi-Fi feature and the fast f/1.8 lens will ensure you have a great field day. (IE Photo: Abhimanyu Chakravorty)
The Nikon Coolpix P340 is an absolute delight for enthusiasts who are looking for a pocket-sized travel camera for everyday use. It does outdo many of its competitors on the price front while also offering solid features to lure photographers. There might be barely any difference between the P340 and its predecessor the P330, but with some tweaks such as an added Wi-Fi and a headline-grabbing 24-120mm f/ 1.8-5.6 zoom lens, makes it a great piece of equipment.
We tested the Coolpix and here’s what we found:
DESIGN AND EASE OF USE
The camera proportions don’t lie. In pictures as in real life, it’s quite compact (103 x 58 x 32mm) and lightweight (194g) enough for you to carry it around in your trouser or shirt pocket without discomfort. But that said, the design is very blocky. When you hold the Coolpix P340, it might feel flimsy but its build quality is almost at par with Nikon’s more expensive cameras. It’s solid yet lightweight with a magnesium alloy chassis.
A very nifty feature that might help a lot of users is the small, but helpful rubber grip on the top right corner, big enough for a thumb to fit. I am a stickler for detail even when I upload pictures on Instagram. So I always carry my smartphone along with a compact camera at all times. This I do to minimise/compensate bad shots taken from a smartphone. There’s only so much a smartphone can do really.
NIKON COOLPIX P340 GALLERY: Once you activate the Vibration Reduction (VR) Mode, the Coolpix takes sharp images without a hassle.
Besides, the camera fires up in 1/2 second and is ready to shoot. The camera grip is also very handy: it allows you to get a secure grip for a great picture even if you use it one-handed. As for instant upload, its Wi-Fi feature will allow you to transfer photos to a smartphone using the Nikon app. This is good news for travel enthusiasts who itch to share photos onto social media without having to return to their dusty desktops to edit and upload them. The camera also has a physical mode dial and front function button which are both great additions. We would have also loved a touchscreen interface. But then that would only jack up the price.
PERFORMANCE
The camera fires up in ½ a second which is great. But when you start to switch between settings in the menu, you notice the laziness. A lot of thinking has gone behind this camera no doubt, but the whole menu operation seems to lack the immediacy people would expect from a high-end camera of this sort.

But that isn’t the case with the P340’s autofocus system. The autofocus is prompt in choosing the right points and works fast enough to capture moments without missing them. The Coolpix P340 can shoot up to 10 frames per second, but processing takes about two seconds and then you are ready to shoot another ten. For RAW+JPEG images the camera took the same time but larger files required around 30 seconds to process.
WiFi
At a time when all cameras come with an integrated Wi-Fi, it’s only natural to incorporate this feature without having second thoughts. The P340 gets thumbs up for the Wi-F feature. But you need to download the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility app to use it. It’s a simple app and you don’t need to set up passwords. What you need to do however is have an open network to so that it’s easier to use a device to connect to the camera. But if you’re worried about security issues, you can set a password for the SSID connection.

The good thing is you can preview your shots within the app on the camera’s SD card on your smart device. The downside is that there’s no direct sharing feature from the app, but then again, you can do that from your smart device.
IMAGE QUALITY
With a 5x zoom lens and a versatile focal range of 24-120mm, the Nikon P340 is great for shooting landscapes at the same time capable of capturing crisp portraits. One thing to remember about the camera is it carries a 12 MP 1/1.7in sensor with an eye-grabbing maximum aperture of f/1.8 at the wide-angle setting.

But once you move through the focal range the nicely blurred backgrounds dissipate at F/5.6 at 120mm. It needs to be mentioned though that the 1/1.7-inch sensor does a great job in blurring the background more giving good results overall.

New app launched by Tourism Ministry, discover India

The Ministry of Tourism has launched a mobile application to enable its users to independently travel and experience 16 cities in the country.
The self-guided tour application ‘Incredible India Walking Tours’ was launched by the Ministry in collaboration with Genesys International Corporation and will cover 16 Indian cities including Agra, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Coastal Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Pune and Surat.
The facility will be extended to 36 cities by December 2015.
The app enables users to sight-see free of cost at their own pace and convenience, with the help of walking tours curated by travel experts.
“We are extremely excited about this because it is the first time an app can enable users to discover India on their own. It’s free, easy to use and, most importantly, comes with 360 degree street views and information put together by a panel of experts. It’s like having a local take you by the hand and show you his city, at your convenience,” Tourism Minister Sripad Naik said.
The application, however, is only available on Blackberry mobile handsets. It runs on all BlackBerry 10 handsets including the Z3, Z10, Z30, Q5 and Q10 phones.
An Android version of the free application is also being worked upon and is expected to be announced in coming weeks, said a senior Tourism Ministry official.

Xolo Q900s Windows 8.1 smartphone coming in July for Rs 11,999

Xolo q900s
Microsoft with the Windows Phone 8.1 update has doubled down on expanding the reach of the Windows Phone ecosystem. Recently, it partnered with Micromax for the Canvas Win line of Windows Phones and now Lava owned Xolo has jumped on the bandwagon.

Xolo has unveiled the Xolo Win line up and the first device is the Q900s and has a price of Rs.11,999 and will be available in July. As of now, the phone is available for pre-orders with online retailers for Rs.9,999.
The phone touts similar specs as the Micromax Canvas Win W121. It has a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor built on the ARM Cortex A7 architecture. There is 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, dual-SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and will have 3G connectivity.
On the back there is a 8-megapixel camera and the front has a 2-megapixel sensor. It's 4.7-inch IPS display has a 720p resolution, delivering 316 pixels per inch. It also has a decent 1,800mAh battery.
It compares favourably with the Canvas Win W121 in terms of specifications. The only downside is that it's a little more expensive than it. That said, Xolo has a penchant for better build quality than Micromax, so that premium should be taken into account, however we have not seen the phone so we can't be totally sure.
Of late, we are seeing many local vendors jump onto the Windows Phone platform as Microsoft has eliminated the licensing fee that it used to charge. Microsoft made this announcement at its BUILD developer conference in April.
Many of these devices are possible because of the turnkey solution Qualcomm and Microsoft have developed that allows Android vendors to port their Android phones to Windows Phone.
Google is taking steps to counteract Microsoft's moves. Earlier in the week the search giant announced the Android One program<http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/google-announce-android-one-smartphone/1/368567.html> where it plans on providing turnkey solutions to vendors in emerging markets providing the hardware specs and also being directly responsible for the Android OS and its updates.
The plan is to provide high-quality devices that cost less than $100, something similar to what Microsoft is trying to achieve with Windows Phone.
Google has already announced Micromax, Karbonn and Spice as its partners for this program in India. It will later expand the program to other parts of the world, so the battle between Android and Windows Phone will become really interesting at the low-end of the market.

Internet of Things fast catching up

“Internet of Things (IoT) could still be nascent in India, but fast catching up. From desktop PCs to tablets, we have moved to the Next Unit of Computing (NUC). And there is good adoption for such complete Intel device,” its Director (Sales) for South Asia B Suryananan has said.
The microprocessor chip manufacturing major through Intel channel symposium is aiming to connect with Intel Technology Providers (ITPs) and highlight the growth opportunities, product roll outs and solution roadmaps.
“Such channel symposiums are being conducted in smaller towns and cities as we see better penetration and adoption in these markets,” he told Business Line.
At the symposium that Intel hosted in the city, the company showcased the latest range of desktops, mobile devices, servers, devices enabling IoT and security devices based on Intel processors.
‘With so many devices, one actually is not too sure how to use these. So, we conduct training sessions for ITPs to enhance customer experience and identify growth opportunities in their business,’ he said and added that the company is in talks with several users on using this (a small hand-held) computing device as a projector PC too’.
‘We are in talks with various governments to see how Intel could help the administration in surveillance and security among others, he said. The company had not firmed up any proposition yet, he added. “IoT would help build end to end infrastructure, including solutions to deal with traffic management, smart energy management, waste management and so on”, he explained.
Intel is aiming to reinvigorate, reinvent and remodel new usage and experience through such symposiums, he said.
The company’s focus on the IoT space includes digital signage, intelligent storage, point of sales and surveillance.

Apple 16GB iPod touch now comes with a 5MP iSight camera for Rs 16900

Apple has announced that a new 16GB iPod touch has been added to its lineup and it tags along a 5MP iSight camera as well as a lower price tag. The previous version of the music-centric device didn’t have a rear-facing snapper and was retailing for around Rs 18000. What’s more, the company has reduced the cost for other models in the series too.
The new 16GB iPod touch model has also gone official in the US along with the price cut for the other versions. Additionally, the company was only offering the device in a single shade, but now plans to sell it in hues of pink, yellow, blue and space grey as well. The iSight camera on the rear is the same 5MP sensor found on the aged iPhone 4 and it’s accompanied by an LED flash.
Apple iPod touch
While the lowered rate of the 16GB model looks to be small, the 32GB and 64GB iPod touch variants have received substantial drops in their retail tags. The new prices are Rs 20900 and Rs 24900, respectively. Prior to this, the former was tagged at Rs 23900, while the latter was selling for Rs 29900. From the entire series, only the fifth generation is eligible for an update to iOS 8 and seeing as Apple has added a new model to the lineup, we don’t expect to see anext generation iPod touch to be launched this year.

The Flipkart Digiflip Pro XT 712 has been announced by the online retailer and it has hit the Indian market at an affordable price of Rs 9999. The device has been highly anticipated from the past few days and now that it has been launched, let’s take a look at its capabilities.
Prior to today, there was absolutely no information on the Digiflip Pro XT 712. Unreasonably forgettable as the name sounds, the tablet is basically an entry-level option which should offer the same performance as the 2012 Nexus 7. In fact, the company is promoting the slate by comparing it with devices such as the Lenovo A7-50 and HP’s Slate 7 Voice Tab which offer similar features.

A microSD card slot has also been thrown into the mix. The device comes with voice calling support and has dual SIM card slots, both of which are compatible with 3G networks.
