McAfee Stinger Portable
on-demand Fake Alert and common virus remover
McAfee Stinger removes 6,000 common viruses and 'fake alert' malware on-demand. It is not a replacement for a full antivirus, but handy in many situations. McAfee Stinger is freeware for personal and business use and requires admin rights.
Features
McAfee Stinger detects and removes prevalent Fake Alert malware and threats identified in the "List Viruses" section of the Stinger application. While not a replacement for full fledged antivirus software, Stinger is updated multiple times a week to include detection for newer Fake Alert variants and prevalent viruses. Note that suspicious and infected files will be quarantined to C:\Quarantine\Stinger and a database will be generated for the currently-scanned PC in that location.
ISSUE: In the current release, McAfee Stinger appears to be purposely crashing the Mcafee Stinger Portable launcher during a scan (causing some non-personal files and registry entries to be left). It can be cleaned up by running again after closing. It also crashes FileZilla and some other apps. We're looking into a fix.
