Lend an Eye was conceptualized with the intent to enrich the lives of the blind. The app not only helps them get from point A to B unsupervised, but also enables them to make choices the way we do. Like deciding which sunscreen lotion to buy based on its SPF value. Or which breakfast cereal is the least fattening of the two.
The large number of smartphone users contributes greatly to the simplicity and ease of this idea. Every smartphone either has FaceTime or Skype video calling. What the app does is mimic the principles of these to turn the phone into the eyes for a blind person. All that the blind need to do is double tap their phone to launch the app, which then contacts several volunteers simultaneously. The volunteer that answers the call becomes the eyes for the blind person. Using the in-built camera on the blind person’s smartphone, the volunteer then guides him to wherever he wishes to go or whatever he wishes to do.
The app has the potential to change the lives of blind people everywhere by giving them the freedom to move around and make choices on their own.
